Monsters In The Room

Monsters In The Room is a solo exhibition — an introspective meditation on how contemporary life compresses and confines the senses within space. Drawing from the social and cultural microcosms of everyday life, the work transforms an endless cycle of pressure into tangible form, giving shape to anxieties buried deep in the subconscious. Here, the "monster" embodies the distorted psychological weight carried by modern individuals, while the "room" represents the fragile, carefully guarded space within us that holds what we can bear.

These monster-furniture pieces rest quietly within the exhibition space, sharing the room with our physical presence — much like negative emotions, which have always resided within us, never truly departing. To occupy the same space as the monsters, to breathe the same air, mirrors a lifelong task we all carry: learning to coexist peacefully with our inner shadows.

Rooted in existentialist thought and viewed through the lens of Adlerian positive psychology, this series is a design experiment in transforming space. The exhibition presents four experimental soft-sculpture monster furniture pieces, a set of metal flower stools — one large, two small — alongside cherished preparatory sketches. Alongside these, the exhibition extends into monster-themed merchandise and handmade ceramic bandages, symbols of warmth and healing.

Marking its second showing at Carter Interior Studio, Monsters In The Room hopes to offer viewers a sense of healing. Together, may we come to understand that the negative emotions within us are not merely shadows — they are proof that we are truly, fully alive.
